Can't Zoom the Camera?

If the dress keeps rotating instead of zooming when you use the camera control, you are not the only player running into it — it is the control problem reported most often in the current build. Some of this page is verified and some of it is what players describe, and every answer says which.

Quick fix

Try this first

Community-reported · current build

Five steps, in the order they are worth trying. None of them is a key this page invented — they are ways of getting the game to read the input you were already giving it.

  1. Put the cursor over the dress — the part of the garment you are trying to zoom toward.
  2. Use the Zoom control the game is showing you, with the cursor still over that area.
  3. If the dress rotates instead, move the cursor and try the same control again.
  4. Close any inventory or placement panel that is open over the scene.
  5. Still stuck? Choose what you are seeing below and this page walks it through.

Why this is first: the strongest clue in circulation is that the zoom control only acts while the cursor is over the area you want to affect. That is a player report rather than an official statement, which is why it carries the badge above. But the game demonstrably changes what the mouse wheel does depending on where the cursor sits — Build 410 patched exactly that in the cutting room — so the report fits how the game is built.

The badges say where each answer comes from. “Verified” means a source this site can point at — the game's own interface strings or a public patch note. “Community-reported” means players describe the behaviour and it has not been confirmed in the game. “Needs current-build check” means nobody has checked it yet, including us.

What happens when you try to zoom?

Four symptoms, four different answers. Pick the one that matches and skip the rest of the page.

The dress rotates instead of zooming

Community-reported · current build

This is the symptom players describe most, and it is the one this page has a workaround for. The camera hint is on screen and the result is a rotation, which suggests the input is being read against whatever the cursor is sitting on rather than as a camera command that works anywhere.

  1. Move the cursor so it rests over the dress or the mannequin itself — not over a panel, an inventory list or a sidebar.
  2. Use the Zoom control the game displays, with the cursor staying there.
  3. If it rotates again, move the cursor to a different part of the garment and repeat once more.

If the view keeps moving around the mannequin instead of closer to it, zoom may not be what you are after at all — you may simply want the other side of the dress.

Turning the mannequin around

The zoom control does nothing at all

Community-reported · current build

Different from the rotation case: the input is not doing the wrong thing, it is doing nothing. That is worth walking through in order rather than guessing at.

  1. Move the cursor back over the dress or mannequin area and try again.
  2. Take the cursor seriously: try the control from two or three different spots over the garment.
  3. Leave any placement or inventory panel that is open, then try once more.
  4. Change scene and come back to the mannequin, which resets the interaction.
  5. Save and reload. A reload is a troubleshooting step and not a known fix — this page is not claiming it repairs anything.

If a reload does clear it, that is worth knowing and still not worth publishing as the answer: no report describes a fix, and no patch note lists one.

You can zoom in but not back out

Community-reported · current build

Reported by players too, and the answer is the same camera control used the other way rather than a second key. The hint on screen shows both directions; this page will not print the keys, for the reason the status section gives.

  1. Use the same Zoom control in the direction opposite to the one that brought you in.
  2. If it starts rotating instead, put the cursor back over the garment and repeat.
  3. Still stuck at the wrong distance? Leave the interaction and return to the mannequin scene before restarting the whole game.

Restarting the game is the last step rather than the first. Nothing published describes zoom breaking in a way a restart repairs.

Zoom on the Steam Deck

Community-reported · current build

Deck players report the same zoom trouble, and it lands harder there because zoom is what makes precise accessory placement possible on a small screen. The game is mouse-oriented and its controller support is unfinished, which is the whole of the explanation.

  1. Treat the trackpad as the mouse: put the pointer over the garment before using the zoom control.
  2. Expect it to be less precise than a mouse, and place small accessories at a distance you can actually see.
  3. Do not wait for a button layout — the game ships no default controller mapping, so there is nothing for this page to list.

The Deck's overall status, its compatibility report and the developer's own position all live on the Steam Deck page rather than here.

Why the mouse wheel does different things

This is the part of the page that is not a guess. The mouse in Dressmaker is contextual: what scrolling does depends on the scene and on what the cursor is over. Build 410's own notes describe changing exactly that.

Cutting room — cursor over a panel
The wheel rotates the pattern piece.
Cutting room — cursor over the inventory
Build 410 stopped the wheel rotating the panel here.
Verified · Build 410

That second row is a published patch note rather than a player theory: the studio changed the wheel's behaviour based on where the cursor was, in one scene, in the current build. It is why moving the cursor before retrying zoom is worth doing — and also why this page will not print “scroll to zoom” as a rule that holds in every scene.

What the game's own strings call this

Verified · game interface

ZoomZoom out/orbit (hold)Pan Camera

These labels are quoted from the game's own text. Notice what they are: the words shown beside an action, with no key, button or modifier attached. That is why the hint you can see on screen and the input that actually works can be described separately — and why this page quotes the first without guessing the second.

Zoom or rotate?

Worth checking before anything else, because the two are easy to confuse and the wrong fix costs a session.

Zoom

The camera moves closer to the dress, or farther away from it.

Rotate

The view moves around the dress at the same distance.

If your view circles the mannequin instead of closing in on it, the game is reading your input as rotate rather than zoom — which makes the cursor step above the fix, not a different key.

Turning the mannequin around

Trying to place accessories?

The reason zoom matters more than it looks. A small brooch or a lace trim is hard to position from a distance, and that is what Deck players are describing when they say zoom is the problem rather than accessories.

  1. Zoom will not hold a close view
  2. So the placement you need for a small piece is hard to do accurately
  3. Fix the camera first, then come back to placing

This page only fixes the camera. What an accessory needs — its length, how many, what it scores — belongs to the accessories guide.

Accessory placement guide

The making camera and the photo camera

A common mix-up behind searches for “camera controls”: the game has two cameras with different jobs, and only the second is named in the tutorial.

Making the dress

The camera you move around the mannequin while placing panels, checking the assembly and positioning accessories. It is the one this page is about.

Taking the photo

Photo mode has its own camera, adjusted with the Camera Controls, plus separate environmental controls for the surroundings. A control that works while photographing may do nothing while sewing.

Zoom on the Steam Deck

The short version, because the handheld has its own page: Dressmaker is a mouse-oriented game and the Deck does not change that.

Performance
Not the reported problem
Zoom
Common friction point
Proper controller support
Still being worked on

Deck players report zoom as the clearest early friction point, and precise accessory placement as the thing it breaks. The developer has said proper controller support is still being worked on, so the awkwardness is a known state rather than a setting you have missed.

There is no button layout on this page, and there will not be one until somebody can verify it. The game ships no default controller mapping, so any list here would be a guess presented as documentation.

Did Build 410 fix zoom?

No published fix. Build 410's notes do not list any change to zoom or the camera, and players were still asking how to zoom after it shipped.

What Build 410 did change

  • Thread colour can now be changed in the sewing scene, by clicking the spools.
  • Sketchbook component names are clearer that they can be clicked.
  • The mouse wheel no longer rotates cutting-room panels while the cursor is over the inventory.
  • Hovering a panel in the inventory now hints at where it goes on the mannequin.
  • Fixed a softlock in the tutorial.

This page does not call it a bug, and that is deliberate. Public evidence cannot separate a control that is hard to understand from an input that is genuinely faulty, and the notes describe neither. “Zoom does not work” is what players report; “zoom is broken” is a claim this site cannot support yet.

The exact zoom input

Needs current-build check

Not verified on the current build

Community reports describe a mouse wheel and a Z, and the game's own hint carries no key, no modifier and no device. Whether that is a combination, an alternative input or just a label is not something this site can confirm — so no key is printed anywhere on this page, and the steps above are written to work under any of those readings. One session in the game settles it.

Questions

Zoom in Dressmaker — common questions

How do I zoom in Dressmaker?
Use the zoom control the game is showing you, with the cursor resting over the dress or the area you want to affect. If the dress rotates instead, move the cursor and try again. The exact input has not been verified by us on the current build, so this page describes the procedure rather than printing a key.
Why does the mouse wheel rotate instead of zoom?
Because the mouse in Dressmaker is contextual: what scrolling does depends on the scene and on what the cursor is over. Build 410's notes describe changing exactly that in the cutting room, where the wheel stopped rotating a panel while the cursor sat over the inventory. Cursor position changing the input is therefore evidenced rather than guessed, and that is why moving the cursor is the first thing to try.
Is zoom broken?
Players keep reporting trouble with it, but nothing published defines those cases as one confirmed fault — the notes describe no zoom fix and no zoom bug. “Zoom does not work” is the accurate description; “zoom is broken” is a conclusion without a source.
Did Build 410 fix zoom?
No published fix is listed. Build 410 changed thread colour, sketchbook component names, the cutting-room mouse wheel, a panel placement hint and a tutorial softlock. Zoom is not among them, and the question was still circulating after the build shipped.
Why can't I zoom on the Steam Deck?
Deck players report zoom as one of the first things that does not behave, and the game is still waiting on proper controller support rather than offering a finished scheme. Treat the trackpad as the mouse and put the pointer over the garment first — and expect it to stay less precise than a desktop mouse, which is a known state rather than a setting you have missed.
Why can I zoom in but not back out?
Use the same contextual control in the direction opposite to the hint that brought you in. If it rotates instead, reset the cursor over the scene and retry; if that fails, leave the interaction and return to the mannequin scene before restarting anything.
Is zoom the same in photo mode?
Do not assume so. Making the dress and photographing it use different cameras with different jobs, and only the photo camera's controls are named in the tutorial. Photo mode has its own guide; this page is about the camera you work with while building.

About this page

How current this page is

Zoom is the control players report struggling with most and the one no published note has touched, so this page is stamped rather than dated. Everything above was compared against Build 410's notes and the current player reports; where the two disagree, or where only players are speaking, the badge says so instead of the sentence being smoothed flat. This page will print a key the day somebody confirms one in the game, and it will lead with the fix the day the notes list one.

What would change this page

  • Somebody confirms the zoom input on a current build
  • A patch lists a zoom or camera fix
  • A patch changes a control the workaround relies on
  • Proper controller support ships
