What it is

What is Dressmaker?

Dressmaker takes real dressmaking and turns it into a hands-on simulation. Instead of choosing a finished outfit from a menu, you make dresses out of their parts: you pick the cloth, place pattern pieces on the fabric, cut them out, sew the garment together and finish it before it goes to whoever asked for it.

It is a single-player game played at your own pace. Clients arrive with their own measurements, tastes and occasions, and between those commissions you can design whatever you like — wear it, put it in the shop window, or sell it off the rack.

Every dress runs through the same loop

  1. Choose fabric
  2. Plan patterns
  3. Cut
  4. Assemble
  5. Sew
  6. Decorate
  7. Deliver or sell

Gameplay

How does Dressmaker play?

A commission runs from the doorbell to the delivery. Each step below hands off to the guide that covers it in full.

  1. Meet a client

Clients arrive at the shop with a request. Each one has her own measurements, her own taste and a story that advances as you work for her.

  2. Read the brief

The brief is a list of rules — a minimum quality, style scores, sometimes a colour, a fabric type or a number of accessories. Reading it before you cut is the difference between a dress that passes and one that does not.

  3. Measure and plan

The client's measurements set the mannequin. The dress is built on that body, so the size you choose changes what fits and how the fit score lands.

  4. Choose fabric

Fabric decides the colour, the cost and a large part of the dress's style score. It is also the budget: better cloth costs more, and a brief can cap what you can spend.

  5. Cut the patterns

Pattern pieces are arranged on the cloth, rotated to follow the grain, and cut. A piece cut off the grain still sews, but it is marked as a mistake and the dress scores lower.

  6. Assemble and sew

The cut pieces become one dress on the mannequin, then go through the sewing scene. This is the stage where most of the quality score is won or lost.

  7. Decorate

Accessories, trims and pins are added last. They add style of their own, and several commissions ask for a specific kind of decoration by name.

  8. Deliver

The finished dress goes back to the client for a verdict. Passing pays the commission and moves the relationship; the dress can also be sold or displayed instead.

Commissions

Make dresses for the town

Clients bring their own measurements, tastes and occasions. A commission is a brief to satisfy rather than a dress to copy, so how you meet it is still yours to decide.

Meet the Dressmaker characters

Each client has her own measurements, commissions, preferences and relationship progression — and the patterns she unlocks as the relationship grows.

Two ways to play

Story commissions and creative dressmaking

The game is both things at once, and the page you need depends on which half you are playing.

Story and commissions

The story runs on the people who come to the shop. Each client's commissions arrive in order, and finishing them moves her story forward.

  • Client briefs with real requirements
  • Character stories, told through the commissions
  • Relationships that level up as you deliver
  • Progression for the shop and the wardrobe
  • Patterns unlocked through relationships

Creative and off-the-rack

Outside the briefs you can make whatever you want. There is no requirement to satisfy and no client waiting, which makes it the place to experiment with a fabric or a silhouette.

  • Make your own designs
  • Choose your own materials
  • Display finished dresses in the shop window
  • Sell dresses off the rack
  • Experiment without a brief

Content scale

How long is Dressmaker?

These are the developer's own figures from the launch announcement, not something we measured.

≈ 35 hours

Story commissions

The announced length of the story commissions. It does not include off-the-rack dressmaking or the time spent designing for fun.

150+

Dress pieces

450+

Fabrics

350+

Accessories

Those three item counts are announced with a plus sign, so they are a floor rather than a total. Because off-the-rack design is open-ended, real playtime varies a lot from player to player.

Prototype

Full game vs the free prototype

An early prototype is still distributed separately from the Steam release. It is a different build with different mechanics, so it is worth knowing which one a piece of advice came from.

FAQ

Dressmaker: the common questions

What is Dressmaker?

A cozy single-player sewing simulation built on real dressmaking: choose fabric, plan and cut patterns, sew the garment, decorate it and deliver it to the client who asked for it.

When was Dressmaker released?

The full release launched on 2026년 9월 21일. It is a complete release rather than an early-access launch, and the game has been patched since.

Where can I play Dressmaker?

On Steam for Windows macOS. The Steam Deck is rated playable, with better controller support still to come.

Is Dressmaker on Switch?

A Switch port has been announced as planned, with no release date. Everything currently confirmed about it is on the Switch page.

Is Dressmaker on mobile?

A mobile port is planned as well, and also undated — no store listing, price or release window has been announced.

How long is Dressmaker?

The developer announced roughly 35 hours of story commissions. That figure excludes off-the-rack dressmaking, and it says nothing about how long you spend designing freely.

Is there a free version?

Yes — an older prototype is still available on itch.io on a name-your-own-price basis. It is a separate build from the Steam release and does not carry the current mechanics.
