What it is
Dressmaker takes real dressmaking and turns it into a hands-on simulation. Instead of choosing a finished outfit from a menu, you make dresses out of their parts: you pick the cloth, place pattern pieces on the fabric, cut them out, sew the garment together and finish it before it goes to whoever asked for it.
It is a single-player game played at your own pace. Clients arrive with their own measurements, tastes and occasions, and between those commissions you can design whatever you like — wear it, put it in the shop window, or sell it off the rack.
Every dress runs through the same loop

Gameplay
A commission runs from the doorbell to the delivery. Each step below hands off to the guide that covers it in full.
Clients arrive at the shop with a request. Each one has her own measurements, her own taste and a story that advances as you work for her.
The brief is a list of rules — a minimum quality, style scores, sometimes a colour, a fabric type or a number of accessories. Reading it before you cut is the difference between a dress that passes and one that does not.
The client's measurements set the mannequin. The dress is built on that body, so the size you choose changes what fits and how the fit score lands.
Fabric decides the colour, the cost and a large part of the dress's style score. It is also the budget: better cloth costs more, and a brief can cap what you can spend.
Pattern pieces are arranged on the cloth, rotated to follow the grain, and cut. A piece cut off the grain still sews, but it is marked as a mistake and the dress scores lower.
The cut pieces become one dress on the mannequin, then go through the sewing scene. This is the stage where most of the quality score is won or lost.
Accessories, trims and pins are added last. They add style of their own, and several commissions ask for a specific kind of decoration by name.
The finished dress goes back to the client for a verdict. Passing pays the commission and moves the relationship; the dress can also be sold or displayed instead.
Commissions
Clients bring their own measurements, tastes and occasions. A commission is a brief to satisfy rather than a dress to copy, so how you meet it is still yours to decide.

Characters
Each client has her own measurements, commissions, preferences and relationship progression — and the patterns she unlocks as the relationship grows.
Two ways to play
The game is both things at once, and the page you need depends on which half you are playing.
The story runs on the people who come to the shop. Each client's commissions arrive in order, and finishing them moves her story forward.
Outside the briefs you can make whatever you want. There is no requirement to satisfy and no client waiting, which makes it the place to experiment with a fabric or a silhouette.
Content scale
These are the developer's own figures from the launch announcement, not something we measured.
≈ 35 hours
Story commissions
The announced length of the story commissions. It does not include off-the-rack dressmaking or the time spent designing for fun.

450+

350+
Accessories
Those three item counts are announced with a plus sign, so they are a floor rather than a total. Because off-the-rack design is open-ended, real playtime varies a lot from player to player.
Our database
The numbers here are counted from our own extracted snapshot of the game — the same data behind every calculator, finder and guide on this site. That is why they differ from the announced figures above.
Where to play
The full release is on Steam for Windows and macOS today. Everything else below is announced or in progress, and each row links to what is actually confirmed.

Prototype
An early prototype is still distributed separately from the Steam release. It is a different build with different mechanics, so it is worth knowing which one a piece of advice came from.

The prototype is years older than the release and does not carry the current mechanics. Do not read a prototype number as a rule for the full game, and do not expect this site's data to describe it.

The developer announced roughly 35 hours of story commissions. That figure excludes off-the-rack dressmaking, and it says nothing about how long you spend designing freely.
Yes — an older prototype is still available on itch.io on a name-your-own-price basis. It is a separate build from the Steam release and does not carry the current mechanics.
