Controls

Dressmaker Controls

What to press, click, drag or hold in each scene — cutting, the mannequin, sewing, accessories and the photo camera. Everything here says where it came from, because not all of it is equally certain.

Controls reviewed through Build 410, checked 28 września 2026.

Controls by scene

What the controls are in each scene

Dressmaker changes what the mouse does depending on where you are, so this is grouped by scene rather than by key. Pick the scene you are in.

Where the design is chosen before any fabric is cut.

  • Change the design

    Verified · in-game tutorial

Click the arrows beside a component to cycle through the options.

  • Test a fabric

    Verified · in-game tutorial

Drag fabric onto the sketchbook page to see how the design and the fabric suit the client.

  • Try colour combinations

    Verified · in-game tutorial

Use the pencil on the sketchbook page.

  • Draft the pattern

    Verified · in-game tutorial

Click Draft Pattern once you are happy with the design.

  • Keep a sample

Fabric and haberdashery samples can be saved in the sketchbook.

Camera

The camera, and why zoom keeps coming up

There are two cameras in this game and they get mixed up constantly: one for making the dress, one for photographing it. Only the second one is named in the tutorial.

Making the dress

The camera you move around the mannequin, the panels and the accessories while building the garment. The extracted game data does not attach a control to it — the hint labels exist without a stated binding — so this page describes what it is for and not which input moves it.

Taking the photo

The camera in photo mode, which the tutorial does name: you adjust its angle with the Camera Controls and the surroundings with the environmental controls. It is a separate camera from the one above, which is why a control that works while photographing may do nothing while sewing.

What the game's own strings call these

In the gameZoomZoom out/orbit (hold)Pan Camera

These three labels are quoted from the game's own text. Note what they are: the words shown beside an action, with no key, no button and no modifier attached — which is exactly why this page can tell you what the game calls something but not always what to press.

Zoom is the known friction point

Needs troubleshooting

Players on desktop and on the Steam Deck report the same thing: the camera hint is visible, and the interaction that happens is not the one it describes. That makes it a troubleshooting problem rather than a missing label, and it belongs on its own page.

Keybinds

Can you change keybinds?

We cannot answer this yet, and we would rather say so than guess. Nothing in the extracted game data or in either public patch note describes a way to rebind a control — but that is not the same as knowing you cannot, and a page that answered either way would be inventing it.

What the evidence does and does not show

  • The extracted data carries the hint labels shown next to actions — Sew, Place Multiple, Zoom out/orbit (hold) — and no key, modifier or device beside them.
  • It also carries no rebinding screen at all: there is no settings, keybind or remap label anywhere in the game's official strings.
  • Neither Build 403 nor Build 410 mentions remapping or controller configuration.
  • Players are asking this right now, which is why the page states its status rather than leaving a gap where an answer usually goes.

Status

Needs build check

Not yet verified on the current build

One check in the game on Build 410 settles this, and the pair of sentences above would collapse into a single clear answer. Until then it stays open.

Steam Deck

What about the Steam Deck?

The short version, because the handheld has its own page: Dressmaker is a mouse-oriented game and the Deck does not change that.

Deck status
Playable
Playable with a mouse alone
Yes — declared
Playable with a keyboard alone

Proper controller support
Not yet

The developers have said proper controller support is still being worked on.

This is not a controller layout and will not become one. The game ships no default button mapping, so a list of buttons here would be a guess presented as documentation. On the Deck, the trackpad stands in for the mouse — and zoom is the interaction players report struggling with, which is the one thing on this page that is genuinely worse on a handheld than on a desktop.

Questions

Dressmaker controls — common questions

What are the controls in Dressmaker?
Dressmaker is built around mouse-style interaction, and what the mouse does changes from scene to scene: dragging places and moves, clicking selects and confirms, and holding is used for some camera and trim actions. There is no single shortcut list worth memorising, which is why this page is organised by the scene you are in.
How do I sew?
Press space. That is what the game's own tutorial instructs once a piece is lined up against its neighbour.
How do I rotate while sewing?
Drag the mouse left and right. The tutorial says the same thing, and it is also the answer to being unable to reach a seam on the far side of the garment.
How do I change thread colour?
Click a thread spool in the sewing scene. Build 410 added this; it was not possible in earlier builds.
Why can't I zoom?
Because this is the interaction the current build is worst at explaining, not because you have missed a key. The camera hint is shown while the camera rotates the dress instead, and players report the same thing on desktop and on the Steam Deck. It has its own page rather than a line here.
How do I rotate the mannequin?
We are not printing a method for this yet. Players who asked have been given several different answers, and some reported that the suggestion did not work for them — so the honest state is unresolved, and it has its own page where the answer will go once it is checked against the current build.
Can I change keybinds?
Unknown, and this page will not guess. The extracted game data contains the labels shown next to actions but no keybinding table and no rebinding screen, and neither public patch note mentions remapping. That is consistent with controls not being remappable, but it is not proof, and one check in-game would settle it.
Does Dressmaker support controllers?
Not properly, yet. Steam marks the game Playable on Steam Deck rather than Verified, the store's controller block declares no full or partial controller support, and the developers have said that proper controller support is still something they are working towards. In the meantime the game is played through mouse-style input, on the Deck's trackpad as much as on a desktop.

About this page

How current these controls are

Controls are the part of Dressmaker that moves fastest between patches, so this page is stamped rather than dated. The current public build is Build 410, and the game data behind this site was extracted from an earlier one — which matters for numbers, and matters more here, because a patch can change what the mouse does without touching a single value in the export. Build 410 did exactly that, twice.

What changed in Build 410

What would change this page

  • The zoom interaction is verified on a current build
  • Rotating the mannequin is verified the same way
  • Somebody checks the keybinding setting in-game
  • A patch changes any control on this page
  • Proper controller support ships
  • Thread colour moves to a different interaction
