How to Change Thread Color

In Build 410 and later, change the thread colour by clicking a thread spool in the Sewing Scene. If an older guide told you it could not be changed, that guide was written before the interaction existed — this page is the current answer and says which build it is.

Quick answer

How to change thread colour

Verified · Build 410

Four steps, and no menu to hunt for. The colour is changed on the spools themselves, while you are sewing.

  1. Enter the Sewing Scene.
  2. Find the thread spools.
  3. Click the spool for the colour you want.
  4. Carry on sewing — no confirmation step.

This is not a setting and it is not on the dress. It is a click in the sewing scene, which is why searching the menus does not find it and why the interaction did not exist in earlier builds.

The badge says where the answer comes from. “Verified · Build 410” means a public patch note announced this interaction, so the page can state it as fact rather than as a workaround. “Not in the recovered data” means the export this site is built from contains no term for it — which is a statement about the data, not proof that the game ignores it.

Where are the thread spools?

The colour change happens inside the Sewing Scene and nowhere else. Four screens a reader might look in, and only one of them has it.

  • SketchbookNot here
  • Fabric StoreNot here
  • MannequinNot here
  • Sewing SceneHere

The spools are part of the sewing screen rather than a settings menu, so they are only on screen while you are at the machine. If you are looking at the sketchbook, the fabric shop or the mannequin, you are on a screen that never had a thread colour.

Why do older guides say you can't?

Because the interaction is newer than the guides. Build 410 added the ability to change thread colour directly in the Sewing Scene by clicking the spools, so every answer written before it is describing a screen that no longer exists.

Before Build 410

Older advice says the thread colour cannot be changed. That was accurate for the build it was written against — the current spool-based interaction had not shipped, so there was nothing to click.

Build 410 and later

Verified · Build 410

Click a spool in the Sewing Scene. The patch notes list the change as an addition, which is the studio saying it did not exist before this build.

Why the old answer is not just out of date

A guide written before Build 410 was not wrong about the game it tested — it was wrong about yours. The question a reader has to answer first is therefore which build the advice was written for, and on this subject that decides everything: before 410 there is no control to find, and after it the control is a click.

The page does not claim the colour could never be changed by any means in any earlier build. It says the current spool interaction was added in Build 410, which is what the published notes describe.

What changed in Build 410

Thread colour is not fabric colour

The two are easy to confuse and they are changed in completely different places, so it is worth separating them before you look.

Thread colour

The colour of the stitching. Changed while sewing, by clicking a thread spool in the Sewing Scene.

Fabric colour

The colour of the cloth itself. Chosen through the fabric you buy and cut, not while sewing.

Changing the sewing thread does not replace the fabric colour, and changing the fabric does not change the thread. If a colour you want belongs to the cloth, this is the wrong page.

Does thread colour affect Quality or Style?

A colour is an easy thing to over-attribute, so here is exactly what this site can and cannot confirm. The three rows below the first one are the recovered data having no term for thread colour — not the game ignoring it.

Not in the recovered data
Appearance
Yes — that is the point of it
Quality formula
No thread-colour term recovered
Style Score
No verified thread-colour term
Commission requirements
No dedicated thread-colour requirement found

Quality is assembled from grain, fit and sewing accuracy in the formula this site recovered, and thread colour is not one of its terms. That is a statement about the extracted data: no page here will claim thread colour raises or lowers Quality, and none claims a brief asks for a specific thread colour.

How Quality is calculated

The spool doesn't change the thread colour

Rare on this interaction, and almost always the same cause: the game is older than the control. Walk it in this order.

  1. Make sure you are in the Sewing Scene, not the sketchbook, the fabric shop or the mannequin.
  2. Click the spool itself rather than the fabric or the piece being sewn.
  3. Check that your game is updated — the interaction requires Build 410 or later.
  4. Leave the Sewing Scene and re-enter it, then retry the spool.

Because the control was added in a specific build, “it does nothing” is usually not a failure but a version: on an older build there is no spool interaction to trigger at all.

Feature requires

Build 410+

Added 2026年9月24日. If your build is older, update Dressmaker through Steam and the spools will be there.

Can I change thread colour on Steam Deck?

The feature belongs to the game rather than to a platform, but the input you use to reach it is a Deck question rather than this one.

This page says “click” because that is the word the patch notes use, and it deliberately prints no button layout: the studio has announced proper controller support as work still to come, so any Deck mapping written here would be a guess presented as documentation.

Questions

Changing the thread colour — common questions

How do I change thread colour in Dressmaker?
Click a thread spool in the Sewing Scene. That is the whole interaction: there is no colour menu and no setting, and it works on Build 410 and later.
Where do I change thread colour?
In the Sewing Scene — not in the Sketchbook, the Cutting Room or the Fabric Store. The patch notes describe the change as clicking the spools while sewing, which is why it is only reachable from the sewing screen.
Why does an old guide say I can't change thread colour?
Because it was written before the interaction existed. Build 410 added the spool-based colour change, so advice dated before it was accurate for that build and is describing nothing on a current one.
What build added thread colour changes?
Build 410, released 24 September 2026. Its patch notes list the thread-colour interaction as an addition.
Does thread colour affect Quality?
It is not a term in the Quality formula this site recovered, which is assembled from grain, fit and sewing accuracy. No page here claims it raises or lowers Quality.
Does thread colour affect Style Score?
No verified direct thread-colour term was found in the recovered data, so this site does not claim one. Style is scored from the design and the materials rather than from the stitching thread.
Why doesn't clicking the spool work?
Check three things in order: that you are in the Sewing Scene, that you are clicking the spool itself rather than the fabric or the piece, and that the game is updated to Build 410 or later. On an older build the interaction does not exist yet.
Is this available on Steam Deck?
The feature is part of the game rather than of a platform, but the Deck's controller support is still being improved, so how you reach the spools there depends on the current Steam Input setup. That belongs to the Steam Deck page rather than to this one.

About this page

How current this page is

Thread colour is the help cluster's one question with a published answer, so this page is stamped with a build rather than written as a workaround: the interaction, the build that added it and the fact that the change is still listed all come from the patch record, and the page moves when that record moves. When a later build changes the interaction, only the stamp and the wording change — the URL stays, because the question does.

What would change this page

  • A patch moves the colour change to a different interaction
  • A patch removes or renames the thread-colour change
  • Proper controller support ships and gives the spools a Deck input
