How Style Scores Work

Four rules decide every number on this page, and each one is visible in the breakdown above.

  • Patterns are additive tags

Each pattern carries its own signed weights for the styles it belongs to, and they are added as they are. A pattern that cuts no cloth still carries them, which is why No Sleeves and No Collar score.

  • Cloth is weighted by part

A part's cloth speaks with a fixed share of the dress's voice — skirt 8, bodice 7, sleeves 3, collar 2 — normalised over the parts that actually cut cloth. A collar four hundred times smaller than a skirt still keeps its 2/20.

  • Decorations give less each time

Placements of the same accessory are ranked by what they are worth for a style, and each one after the strongest is worth a little less than the one before. Nothing is capped: a tenth bow still adds a little.

  • Only positive totals collect

Negative contributions are shown and subtracted, but a style that ends up at or below zero scores nothing at all. The number printed is the engine's own, rounded up the way the game rounds it.

How to Reach a Style Target

A target is a style plus a direction, and the search answers it in three moves.

  1. 1

Ask for a number, not a feeling

Pick the style and type the score a brief asks for — at least for a floor, at most for a style a brief wants kept low. When a brief asks for two, add a second target.

  2. 2

    Keep what you cannot change

Tick the parts of the dress you already own and they stay exactly as they are. Everything else is searched, and each result says how many pieces it moved.

  3. 3

Read the margin, not just the pass

Every result prints how far past the target it landed. A dress sitting on the line passes today and is one edit from failing, so a wider margin is worth having while the dress is still being worked on.

Style Score Is Not Quality

Grain, fit and sewing accuracy decide a brief’s quality minimum, and none of the three is a pattern, a cloth or a decoration. A dress can clear every style target here and still score too low on quality to hand in.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I calculate Dressmaker style scores?

Bring a dress in — from the builder, from a build this browser saved, or by filling the four parts here — and the calculator runs the same engine the game's own recipes do. Nothing is entered twice and nothing is estimated: the number you read is the number that dress produces.

  • Why does the same fabric change Cute more on a skirt than on a collar?

Because a part's cloth does not weigh by size. Bodice, skirt, sleeves and collar speak with a fixed share of the dress's cloth voice, so one fabric on a skirt moves more of the score than the same fabric on a collar.

  • Why can a good fabric lower a style score?

Every fabric and accessory carries signed weights, and some are negative for a given style. Burlap, for instance, pulls Romantic down. The breakdown prints those rows instead of dropping them, so a swap that would cost points is visible before you make it.

  • Do decorations give less each time I add one?

Yes. Placements are ranked by what they are worth for that style, and each one after the strongest is worth a little less than the one before it. That is why the accessory bars get shorter further down the list.

  • Where do the target numbers come from?

From the build's own briefs. The quick targets are the floors real commissions ask that style for, counted and ordered by how often they are asked. A style no brief scores gets no suggestions at all rather than a rounded guess.

  • Does the calculator change my dress?

No. It measures. Adding a decoration here edits the dress on this page only, the what-if panel never applies itself, and any change that should be real is handed to the Dress Builder or the Dress Fixer, which own that job.

  • How do I increase Elegant in Dressmaker?

Search for it. Set Elegant to at least the number you need and the solver returns patterns, cloths and decorations that reach it, ordered the way you asked. Each result prints the terms behind the score, so you can see which piece is doing the work.

  • Which fabrics add Gothic?

Open the Gothic style page, or ask for a Gothic target and read the cloth the solver picks. A fabric’s Gothic weight is multiplied by the share of the dress its part speaks for, so the same cloth adds more on a skirt than on a collar.

  • Do accessories stack style scores?

They add up, but each placement after the strongest is worth less than the one before it, so five of one bow never give five times one bow. Elaborate is the exception: every placement adds a point of it, unattenuated.

  • Can an item reduce a style score?

Yes. Weights are signed, so a cloth or a trim that leans towards one style can pull another down. Negative rows are printed in every breakdown rather than hidden, which is the whole explanation for a score that fell when something was added.

  • How do I meet two style requirements at once?

Add both targets — Cute at least 65 and Formal at least 50, say — and the search looks for one dress that satisfies them together rather than two dresses that satisfy one each. A target that cannot be reached with the parts you locked is reported as impossible instead of approximated.

  • Does Quality affect Style Score?

No. Quality is read from grain, fit and sewing accuracy, none of which a pattern, a cloth or a decoration decides; style scores come from the tags those three carry. A dress can clear every style target and still fail a quality minimum.

Reading a Dressmaker style score

A Dressmaker style score is not an opinion: it is a sum of three kinds of contribution, each one published in the game's own data. Patterns add signed tags, so a wrap bodice and a circle skirt carry their Cute, Elegant or Cool points with them whatever the cloth. Fabrics add their own weights multiplied by the share of the dress's cloth voice the part they cover owns — which is why one silk on a skirt moves a score more than the same silk on a collar. Decorations add their weight attenuated by how many placements already outrank them.

This style calculator reads all of that from the dress in front of you and prints it itemised: the Cute score, the Formal score, the Romantic score and the other nineteen, each with the patterns, fabrics and accessories that produced it, including the ones pulling it down. Aim a score at a target and it shows the gap, and it can preview a single swap before you commit to it. Turned around, it answers the same question backwards: name the scores a brief asks for, keep the parts you cannot change, and it searches for dresses that reach every one of them at once, printing the same breakdown under each result. What it does not do is repair a whole commission — the dress fixer owns that — and it does not measure quality, because no pattern, cloth or decoration decides it.
