How a dress gets generated
Three passes: the brief decides what counts, the search measures dresses against it, and a repair pass closes the rules a pattern choice cannot.
1The brief becomes rules
A commission or a gift request already states its own rules. A style floor, a coin budget or a surprise roll is turned into a brief of the same shape, so every entry point ends with one set of rules to satisfy.
2Dresses are measured against it
Pattern, cloth and trim combinations are measured against the brief: the style scores each one reaches, what the material costs, and whether every rule passes.
3A repair pass closes the gaps
Fit, grain and the colour split depend on the cloth as much as the pattern, so the search swaps cloth and trims where that closes a gap, and says so when it had to.

Questions about a generated dress
Is this the best dress I can make?
It is the best dress this search reached, not a proven best. Most modes stop looking once a dress passes rather than measuring every combination, so another dress can score the same or slightly higher. Open it on the bench and change anything you like.
Will this dress get the commission accepted?
Every rule the brief states is listed below the dress, with what passes and what is short. The three that cannot be read off a pattern, a cloth and a trim — grain, fit and sewing accuracy — are marked as settled on the mannequin instead of being guessed at.
Does Surprise Me pick at random?
No. It picks one of the style floors a real client asks for, then searches for a dress that reaches it, so the answer is always something you can make. Press the button again and it rolls a different floor.
Can I use it early in the game?
Yes, and that is the default: only patterns, cloth and trims you can already get are used. Switch to locked pieces to see what a stronger dress would need, and the list tells you the prestige level or the progress behind each one.
Where does the cutting plan come from?
Every part reports the panels it is cut from and the cloth it uses, and the plan groups the parts by that cloth. Two parts cut from one bolt are one row and one purchase, which is the length you actually need to buy.
Why did it spend less than my budget?
A budget is a ceiling, not a target. Once the brief's rules pass the search stops there, because spending more would not change the answer. If you would rather spend it, open the dress on the bench and trade a cloth up.

What a generated dress is, and what it is not
A generated dress is a real proposal: a pattern and variant for each part, a cloth for each part, the trims, the cloth to buy and what the lot costs. It is built from the same rules the rest of this site publishes, so the commission checker, the quality bench and the fabric sheet all agree with what is on this page.
What it does not do is finish the dress. Quality is decided on the mannequin, where grain, fit and sewing accuracy are set; a style floor says nothing about the colour split; and the search reports the best dress it reached rather than the best dress that exists. Treat the result as a dress worth making, then check it in the game before cutting anything.
